Trees, for me the appeal has nothing to do with the literal meaning of the words to the song. The intro before Jason starts to sing just kicks and how he screams Margareeeheeheet. It's a favorite in my mp3 player while working out or running. Funny, you mentioned that men seem to like it, my wife and niece love it. My niece, who is 16, is all about the lyrics and their meaning. At 16 she's way deeper than I am. It's just a cool song to me that's all.
But, on the other hand if you do think about the 50+ year difference in the first verse, it is kind of creepy.

Don't get me wrong, I think it's a great song, and I love how Jason sings it.
I've never really taken the 20,000 days thing literally...i've always seen it as more of an exaggeration.
